Okay, so you’re planning on cosplaying a character from Homestuck, and you’re on a tight budget. That’s understandable, a lot of people are. Some materials and methods might be out of your budget range, and you’re now considering cheaper options to create your costume. That’s okay as well. However, you should NEVER put your health at risk for that.
Now, I know that when it comes to T-Shirts and their weird designs, you might be running low on cash. But the worst way to do this is using Sharpies. PLEASE, NEVER EVER USE SHARPIES TO MAKE YOUR SHIRTS, THIS IS SERIOUSLY THE WORST IDEA.
the lovely sewingserket has all the symbols for kids trolls and god tiers formatted as a single piece. i dont think i can stress how much easier that makes using iron on transfers. the edges are even nicely rounded for easy ironing!

While goofing off and looking at tons of DIY hipster blogs, I found this great ink transfer stuff!

I haven’t used it personally, but from what I’ve seen, it looks like a great option for making the kid’s shirts! :D (Make sure to read their FAQ and stuff, and the product an be purchased at JoAnn’s or online)

I think this would be prefect for Latula in blue! unfortunately, it only comes in one size

i suppose this might work for other kids/trolls too, so i guess this is pretty universal.
okay! what you need.

fabric paint of your choice. i bought these at michaels for about $4 total.

a shirt of your choice (pre washed) a couple brushes of your choice (i used a camel hair one and acrylic for details), a print of your design, and scissors

freezer paper and a sharpie

put your design under the freezer paper waxy side down. pin your paper to keep it from rolling up. also be careful to not let your design slide around. it’s a bitch to realign.

start tracing everything! you dont have to fill in the eyes, it’s just gonna be cut out anyways.

now that you have your pretty design all traced, steal a little cutting device from your school acquire a sharp tool such as a box cutter or something like that

get some kind of cardboard or stiff material to cut on, unless your parents don’t care about you messing up their tables/counters. or if you live alone. i dont care. this is all i had with me cause im a fatty and i love doughnuts

looks great!

cut out eyes and any inner pieces. don’t throw them out.

cut out the outline.

now relocate! go somewhere you can iron. yes, you’re gonna have to iron. i know it’s scary, but you can do it. i have faith in you, buddy
align your outline on your shirt where you want it. iron it in place, THEN iron in place your eyes/nose. if you put it on all at once, they’ll slide around and be dumb so dont do that. also, don’t use steam on your iron

now that everything is ironed on nice and tight, mix up some colours!! the green i bought was much too bright, so i mixed it with black to get the perfect shade. if you have any old magazines, use them as a mixing surface/palette, it’s seriously the best ever. my school uses them, and you can just rip off a new page when you need a new palette!

looks good. you can choose to blow dry it to make it dry faster if you like. once it’s completely dry to the touch, peel off all of the freezer paper.

BEAUTIFUL

this is where i used my acrylic brush with a sharp tip. you need as much precision as you can get. be sure to take your time with this step or it will look messy and weird. the instructions on my fabric paint say to set it with an iron to produce a “velveteen finish” but i dont think im going to bother. let it dry overnight and don’t wash it for 72 hours after it’s dry.
i hope this helped!!
if you have any questions, send me an ask

I know a lot of people have made symbols for shirts, and there are whole pages dedicated to symbols. But there’s no need to go looking for them because the MSPA Wikia has them on all of the characters’ pages. If you click on the symbol on the top corners of the character box, they’ll enlarge with high resolution! And if they’re too small for print size, you can just put them in a photo editing program and re-size them.

Hi there, I’m currently working on a femDave and femDirk and wanted to make a dress out of the official homestuck shirts. While poking around online I found this great tutorial for how to turn a large t-shirt into a fitted dress.
Tutorial Link: http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-make-a-baggy-shirt-into-a-T-shirt-dress/?ALLSTEPS
I personally bought a guys t-shirt for both cosplays in the largest sizes available (2XL for Dave’s and 4XL for Dirk) and they go down to my knees (I’m about 5’1”).

So I am working on a couple Jake English cosplays and haven’t really found much in terms of help for his outfits. For Trickster! Jake it took me forever to find socks the color in the comic. I got these ones fairly cheap. For his bowtie, I found a cheap one that clips on rather than a tie and it works better. I had a hard time finding green wigs that aren’t extremely tacky and clownish. I ordered this one and it is pretty good. This website sells pretty much any solid color tee shirt and are relatively cheap.
